*back, Part III

11Nov02

Working on the *back to Trackback forwarder I found some more XML-RPC bugs in the PHP code for Ping Retrieval. Bleh.
The hacked-together VB.NET forwarder works, XML-RPC.NET rocks. It needs a lot of massaging to be useful for anyone other than me, but that can wait.
Noticed that the <$MTEntryID$> is not necessarily the Trackback ID, and […]

*back, Part II

11Nov02

Wasted two hours fighting an implementation oddity in the XML-RPC library I’m using. XML-RPC return values and faults are handled by the same mechanism. Trying to return a fault code of 0 causes strange errors to occur.
My Pingback server now works, tested with Ian Hickson’s HTTP GET Proxy.
Next up: *back to Trackback forwarder.

Trying not to make a habbit of this

11Nov02

I’ve completely changed my archives, breaking all permalinks and probably causing RSS items to show up as new again.
Sorry.
I kept my “upstreaming” disabled all day so that this would only happen once as I tweaked the new layout. There won’t be any more structural changes after this, I promise

What I’m working on…

11Nov02

I love the concepts of Trackback and Pingback, but these systems are designed to work with weblog software that runs on the web server. Radio runs on the desktop, Blogger and many other weblog tools run on someone else’s servers. A large group of webloggers are essentially unable to participate.
And even though I upgraded to […]

PHP, Part III

11Nov02

I’ve finished fighting with PHP and PostgreSQL, now I’m starting to get down to business.
My early impressions? If I had the money for a co-located Windows server, I would switch in a second and never look back. PHP doesn’t come with a substitute for ADO, I’m less than completely satisfied with XMLRPC for PHP, and […]

NewzCrawler 1.3.1 build 1106

08Nov02

Another day, another release of NewzCrawler. This release adds support for Movable Type’s Categories API. Works great!
The weblog client still unnecessarily encodes quotes within posts, causing problems with Radio… but I don’t use Radio anymore The XML parser that MT uses is more liberal with what it accepts.

PHP, Part II

08Nov02

After thoroughly reading the instructions for compiling PHP on Win32, I decided not to proceed. The whole thing seemed difficult and error-prone, and I have enough trouble with simple VC++ compilations.
XML-RPC for PHP should do what I need without a re-compile.
So the battle moved on to database support.

DVD burners getting cheaper

08Nov02

I was semi-surprised to be standing in Best Buy the other day, looking at a $250 DVD+R/RW drive (after $50 rebate). Digging around on Pricewatch you can find some drives around $200.
They will probably hit $100 by next Christmas.
