Lately I am terribly behind… It took me a week to get around to trying NewsGator, and I immediately ran into problems. Greg was very responsive, eventually sending me a snippet of code to exercise the Outlook object model. With a bunch of trial-and-error I managed to get the code working with my copy of Outlook, and the changes have been implemented in v0.6.
I’m still trying to figure out if I actually like NewsGator.
Being in Outlook neatly solves many of my “Aggregator as a Knowledge Repository” issues. I’m already using Outlook to store and manage a huge quantity of data, somehwere around 1GB in total, integrating RSS into that workflow is a mind bomb.
But… My workflow it already becoming overwhelmed, and I’ve only imported about 1/3rd of my NewzCrawler subscriptions. With so many RSS folders it has become impossible to just glance at the folder list and decide if a more-important email has arrived.
It’s an unexpected bump. Adjusting my workflow may be as simple as using another Outlook window to navigate the RSS folders, keeping them from getting in the way of my email.
I have a couple of other nits, but I think that they are all Outlook problems:
- Items don’t pick up RSS timestamps
- Can’t tell where a link points until you click on it
- Can’t “Copy link location”
