A recent Ask Slashdot ponders other sources of massive traffic spikes.
While I lived in Germany, I got called in to troubleshoot a New York television station’s web server. They noticed that their home page would take a minute or more to display whenever the weather was bad. Bad weather leads to more weather reports, which […]

Speaking of the Slashdot Effect…
30Apr03Dear Jakob Nielsen
30Apr03Please move your web site to a facility that can handle the load of Slashdot. The company that you began hosting with has been merged or acquired three times in the past five years. Their facilities are forgotten relics, nobody on the outside knows that they exist.
The good news is that the resulting corporate entity […]
Opera for Series 60
30Apr03Opera has launched their browser for Series 60 phones (Nokia 3650, 7650). I was looking for that last week when I wrote of Nokia’s brain-dead browser, guess I was just a few days early…
There’s a free 14-day trial. For a limited time the price is EUR 19.95, the regular price will be EUR 39.
Is Microsoft Teasing Me?
30Apr03I got this “Launch Event Confirmation” e-mail from Microsoft yesterday. You may recall from last week that I was on the waiting list and seeking a Microsoft contact that could get me in.
The Windows Server 2003 and Visual Studio .NET 2003 Launch Event is almost here! This e-mail is to confirm your registration information. […]
Treo 180 Arrives
30Apr03So I got a $150 Treo 180 from TigerDirect. It did come SIM-locked to T-Mobile, but lucky for me they have a generous unlocking policy and I have not cancelled my account yet. Supposedly I will receive an unlock code in 7 to 10 days.
I decided to buy the Treo 180 because it seemed like […]
Size Matters
30Apr03And you know, the SmartPhone is about two-thirds the size of the T-Mobile Pocket PC, so it’s not like it is so incredibly small that it will be significantly easier to carry around. [Frank McPherson]
Size has been on my mind ever since I decided to buy a Nokia 3650. It’s slightly bigger than the Orange […]
Bluetooth Woes, Part II
28Apr03Saturday night I schlepped back to the Sunrise CompUSA and found their hidden stash Bluetooth products — behind the PDA counter, locked behind glass, on the bottom shelf. I snagged USB and CompactFlash adapters from Ambicom.
They both work, to varying degrees.
On the PDA side, I can’t get Ambicom’s Phonebook / SMS software to work. Establishing […]
Bluetooth Woes
25Apr03I got a Belkin Bluetooth dongle from the Sunrise CompUSA this afternoon.
I can’t make it work.
The Bluetooth Configuration refuses to save my settings, every time I open it the “Computer Name” is blank. I have successfully paired with the Nokia 3650, but that’s all I’ve managed to accomplish.
I’m on the phone with technical support now. […]
