The Disposable Laser Printer Era

22May03

Amazon has the Samsung ML-1430 Laser Printer for $120 after $50 rebate.

I have their predecessor model, the ML-1210, which I picked up from CompUSA a year and a half ago for about $250. CompUSA had an HP for around $300, and a Brother for a few bucks less, but when I compared specs the Samsung was most similar to models that cost 50% more.

Negatives? New toner cartridges average about $10 more than comparable HP models. For my printing needs, an HP would work out cheaper after roughly 20 years…

I read a while back that Dell was planning on competing on consumables costs as well as printer costs, with relabelled Lexmarks as I remember, but I don’t know if they’re actually doing it yet.

But the 1430 is a nice disposable: I’ve got several of them being pounded on in an unfriendly environment, and as long as you can keep the “Toner Saver” button pressed (it makes a huge difference in toner consumption, but once someone prints a web page with grey text, it tends to get deactivated), they aren’t too horribly painful to keep fed.

“Toner Saver” on the Samsungs is supposedly good for an extra 40%.

Dell is seriously undercutting Lexmark and the discounters on the P1500/E323. TCO comparisons against other manufacturers are muddied by Dell’s capacity and recycling options.
