My desk is one of the few large items that returned from Germany with me. It’s a very basic design: roughly 60″ x 30″, slightly curved sides with rounded edges, four tubular adjustable-height legs. Probably from IKEA. It’s beauty comes from it’s simplicity; it doesn’t really try to do anything except provide a massive working surface. By itself it was plenty comfortable in my original configuration of laptop plus two 17″ CRTs; with the addition of a Griffin iCurve and a few Fellowes Heavy Duty Monitor Arms it ably handles three displays, two keyboards, one laptop, one O2, and a hefty assortment of clutter.

The only problem with this desk, other than being a clutter magnet, is that there is nowhere to hide / organize the mess of wires eminating from from the four PCs underneath. I was about to hacksaw a slotted cable raceway system and mount the pieces on the back and legs of the desk when I came across the Cable-Safe System at ThinkGeek.

This kit is ingenius. It starts with the Desk Clamp, which is a c-clamp with a pole attached and holes cut out for mounting Cable Hooks or Cable Tracks. The tracks are mainly there to allow hooks to be horizontally arranged, forming a shelf for small peripherals or power bricks. The hooks and tracks have holes for attaching little bungies cords (included) to secure bulkier items. It also comes with labels, velcro straps, and several ahesive-backed Cable Guides (pastic locking rings, my IBM at work has a couple).

I just ordered two.

I think that I’ll do a full pictorial review once they arrive — the cable situation under my desk is far worse than any of their before-and-after pictures.

PS: I’m looking for a decent dual-LCD mount. C-clamp, 100mm VESA, under $200. E-mail tby@yehl.us.
