Almost Cool

Macintouch points out some new support articles from Apple, including one on the iMac G5 Diagnostic LEDs. I immediately thought of certain IBM servers at work that have something called Lightpath, which uses LEDs to identify a number of fault scenarios and often will identify the specific component that failed (ie: Memory Bank 0). The Apple version is nowhere near as cool, just two LEDs indicating power to the power supply and mainboard, a third to indicate that “the computer and the LCD display are communicating”, and a fourth to indicate over-heating. Big frickin’ deal.

My G5 iMac lust is fading. Add my voice to the chorus wishing for an integrated remote control, TV tuner, and PVR functionality. At least that way once the computer is obsolete it would still be a pretty sweet widescreen LCD television.

I’m also starting to agree with those that think Apple’s desktop product line is missing something. Not necessarily the iCheap headless iMac that has been debated to death everywhere… How about a single-G5 PowerMac for $1099?
