My Audiovox SMT5600 arrived this morning. Everyone at work is impressed by the large screen and compact form. It compares favorably to just about everything they’ve held up to it so far. Getting ActiveSync working with my laptop over Bluetooth was a challenge — fortunately I remembered Phonemag’s instructions. That first step was the missing link. Probably not needed on systems with the MS Bluetooth stack and the latest ActiveSync — will find out when I get home tonight.
Side by side with the MPX-200, indoors the screen appears much brighter, outdoors in the bright light of the Sunshine State the SMT5600 doesn’t fare as well.
Do I order a 512MB miniSD card now, or wait a few weeks for a 1GB card?
More later…
Tip #1: If you turn on Flight Mode, then re-activate Bluetooth, you will not be able to get out of Flight Mode until you de-activate Bluetooth again or Hard Reset.
Tip #2: Don’t run ActiveSync and a headset over Bluetooth at the same time — the audio quality will be extremely bad.
Update: For me the Nokia 8290 and 8890 have been the benchmarks for compact phones — small, usable, and easy to fall in love with. Holding the SMT5600 next to them it is clear that I’ve finally found a new benchmark.
Not that this will stop me from lusting for the Motorola A630…
Update 2: Does ActiveSync only support one sync partner over Bluetooth?
Update 3: What the heck does the Acute Triangle status icon mean? It shows up next to the headset icon and isn’t listed in the little instruction booklet.

Are you syncing with an Exchange server? I am most interested in the smartphone Always uptodate RIM-like functionality…supposedly.
Have you tried that?
Nope.
Then perhaps I can borrow for a little while and test it?!?!?!
I’ve never been big on sharing. Just head over to your local AT&T Wireless store and ask for a demo.
Thanks for the pointer on the flight mode/bluetooth issue… it caught me offguard today.
The little triangle seems to mean “roaming”… I’m on an AT&T plan with an AT&T-branded phone, and that triangle shows up when I’m on Cingular’s network vs AT&T’s. Or so it seems.
Yeah, I did eventually realize that. I actually read the stinkin’ manual trying to figure it out. Stupid manual.
