Go Navy

25Apr05

My (half-) brother has started the process of enlisting in the Navy. They gave him some take-home drug tests.

I am thrilled beyond words that he has finally decided to do something. For years he’d planned to join the Army on his 18th birthday, but that date came and went in 2002. Can’t really blame the kid for becoming less enthusiastic at the time. I have always tried to steer him towards the Navy — greater opportunity to see the world, more predictable rotations, and lower risk of dying in some arid shithole. And while our family line has been relatively short of males eligible for service, what history we have has been at sea — our grandfather joined the Navy during WWII, our grand uncle was a Coastie in Korea, both as volunteers.

And for the record, that’s my tobacco pipe and I used booze and hookers to entice him into posing with it…
