Eye of the Storm

25Aug05

Katrina has landed and I am just barely north-west of her center. I’ve always had a thing for girls whose names start with Kat…

She’s a pretty weak storm, no worries here. Free vacation day tomorrow :-)
8:10PM Power’s out. The little UPS that the LCD TV is attached to lasted about 5 minutes. Time to move one of the Big Honkin’ UPSes

Friday, 5PM Power is still out, they say half of Broward county is still down. In my travels I haven’t spotted a single Florida Power & Light truck. Several BellSouth crews, a huge number of municipal cleanup crews, but no FPL. Air conditioning is a basic necessity in South Florida…

It took me an hour of driving around to find a T-Mobile Hotspot that was up. Buggers haven’t lifted the fees like they did last year.

I’ll be without e-mail until the power comes back. All my mail gets routed through a server at home. One of these days I’ll get it all moved on to my dedicated server…

Friday, 6:30PM FPL Statement:

90% of our customers in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties affected by Hurricane Katrina will be restored by late Tuesday night. The final 10% will most likely be those most affected by Hurricane Katrina. We expect everyone affected by Katrina to have power by Friday. We will do everything we can to restore these customers before Friday but there could be factors that prevent earlier restoration times – such as the number of workers, weather, flooding and accessibility to damaged equipment.

The sad thing is, had this been a more severe storm they would be pulling in more work crews from other states and the job would be done quicker…

Saturday, 3:35AM I woke up wishing for death. It’s hard enough trying to sleep in an 85F room, add in the nearly 100% humidity and it’s just plain miserable. Everything on my bed is soaked.

Then the lights came on!

PS: Next to air conditioning, glowsticks are the coolest invention ever.
