SD Card Speeds

18Feb06

Two of the four videos that I recorded with my DMC-FX9 last weekend were cut short. At first I thought that vibration or accidental contact might have been the cause, but some testing proved otherwise. After 90 seconds or so the camera comes up with a message to the effect of “Your SD card is too slow.”

The manual for the card recommends a 10MB/s card for recording 30fps VGA video, but the recording time estimates are around 1.5MB/s and my actual videos weigh in at less than 1.1MB/s. I get about 2MB/s writing large files to the card with my memory card adapter. Seems like a buffer management issue to me.

Having to buy another, faster SD card ain’t much of a hardship. I’m just annoyed at the growing number of useless SD cards accumulating on my desk..
