Textpattern switches from GPL to BSD license (and why I believe that it doesn’t matter)

24Mar06

Alex Shiels has announced that Textpattern 4.1 will use a BSD-style license instead of the GPL when it is released. Several reasons were provided which can be summarized as the GPL not being well-suited for scripting environments such as PHP, especially for programs which allow for plug-ins.
On one of my Firefox tabs there is a […]

Comment Spam Storm

22Mar06

I just got hit with a boatload of comment spam linking to http://www.etaloninc.com/pacific-poker.html. Looks like a distributed attack by Post ID. Fucktards.
I’ve temporarily set comments to require registration. And registration has always been disabled. So no comments until further notice. Which may be never because the signal-to-noise ratio was pretty darned low without the spammers.

Never may sometimes be better than late

10Mar06

When I was shopping for car insurance I requested online quotes from pretty much every insurance company that I could name. One of them was AIG. I don’t remember exactly what happened that day, but I think their online process barfed on me right at the end. The quote never arrived in my e-mail and […]

Nearly Two Weeks with T-Mobile’s MDA

06Mar06

My 14-day return period with the T-Mobile MDA is just about up. I’m grudgingly going to keep it… I’d rather use the MDA as a data-only device but T-Mobile recently jacked their unlimited data-only plan from $30 to $50, and for my usage patterns I’m better off spending $10 more to bundle their cheapest voice […]

Fraud Detection is Dumb

06Mar06

My credit union’s VISA fraud department left a message for me on Friday evening. “Call us ASAP regarding some suspicious activity on your card, 800-BLA-BLAH.” Not the 800 number listed on the back of my card. Not any of the numbers listed on my credit union’s web site. Google and the various reverse directories on […]

AKU2 / MSFP for K-JAM / MDA / HTC Wizard

03Mar06

Speaking of MSFP, i-mate has dropped AKU2 for the K-JAM in “World Wide English” and a few other languages. Check the xda-developers forum for details on how to get it. Early word is the MSFP works great, A2DP is disabled (possibly due to the Wizard’s weak CPU), and downgrades may not be possible so be […]

Free SIM Unlock for HTC Devices

02Mar06

The HTC Wizard Unlocker removes the SIM lock from any HTC Wizard variant (T-Mobile USA MDA, Cingular 81xx, i-mate K-JAM, etc). You must sign in to the forum to see the download. Worked like a charm on my MDA. The tool can also perform a “CID unlock” to allow another vendor’s firmware to be used, […]
