Misadventures in mini-DVI

09Sep06

So I’m at CompUSA, looking for Apple mini-DVI to VGA and DVI adapters plus a DVI cable. They of course only have the DVI and S-Video adapters, and I struck out looking for a DVI cable, so I figure that I’ll just get the DVI adapter, buy a cable across the street at Best Buy, and use a DVI to VGA adapter for the rare occasion that I need to use a projector.

So I’m at Best Buy, looking for a DVI cable in the computer cables area, and a blue shirt asks if I need help. “I’m looking for a DVI cable.” “They’re in the A/V section, 5th row.” I make my way over to A/V land, and I’m staring at a rack full of HDMI cables for a couple minutes when I finally spot a DVI mixed in with the audio cables. $51 for a 6-foot. Yeah, right. And blue shirt #2 appears asking if I need help. “Got any DVI cables that aren’t priced like I’m an idiot.” Blue shirt #2 chuckles and I walk away empty-handed, spotting some even more expensive DVI cables as I exit that row.

Fast forward to tonight. I break out the mini-DVI adapter, scrounge up a DVI to VGA adapter, try to connect them, and they just won’t go. WTF? I take a good look at them, and deitydamnit, the Apple adapter doesn’t have the pins necessary for VGA operation.

Note the four pins missing on the right side of the Apple adapter.

Dear Apple. You would annoy me slightly less if you opened a frickin’ store in the Fort Lauderdale area. You’ve got three in Miami-Dade county and two in Palm Beach county. Why no love for the former home of Spring Break? Sincerely, Bryce.
