“I think the phone may be the weakest part of the iPhone.”
— David Pogue, Ultimate iPhone FAQs List, Part 2
I lost interest in the iPhone during the keynote. Touchscreens suck. Multi-touch, or whatever it’s called, might make touchscreens suck slightly less but sucky will they still be. Popular smartphones all look like the Blackberry, Sidekick, or SMT-5600 because those are the forms that work. The Treo is the only smartphone that has achieved wide popularity while still packing a touchscreen, and I would argue that Palm’s success is in large part due to the fact that the Treo’s buttons can handle 99% of actions without having to resort to touching the screen. My #1 gripe with the T-Mobile MDA was the touchscreen, I stopped using it months ago and recently picked up a Treo 680.
The iPhone will probably be might be the best iPod ever, but between the touchscreen, Cingular, and lack of a developer program, I am completely uninterested. My Treo is a better smartphone in every way that matters.
