Sometimes VMware does not, in fact, rule.

Upgrading VMware Workstation is a minor pain in the ass, in that it does a full uninstall and then a semi-fresh install. Most settings carry over, including the all-important license key, but this morning I discovered one group of settings that does not: the subnets assigned to the virtual networks.

When I got to work this morning the MacBook was having all kinds of odd networking problems. Got a DHCP assignment but couldn’t reach the assigned DNS servers. Could reach outside DNS servers fine. I could reach some on-site internal servers but not others. No problems reaching remote stuff. I briefly wondered if I might have picked up something nasty at a hotspot I’d connected to before coming to the office, but my firewall was looking ok. After scratching my head for a while in utter disbelief I finally noticed that one of my VMware “virtual” NICs had an IP assignment right in the middle of the subnet for our Miami office.

Oooops.

Sadly, this has actually happened once before and I knew exactly where to change the offending settings.
