The Inviolable Rule of Systems Administration

27Feb07

Excerpt from a work-related email that I just sent:

We’re talking about violating the “Never f*** with s*** on a Friday” rule on Tuesday? Has our clusterf*** quota not already been met this week?

I’m gonna catch some heck for that, I’m sure, but…

In the cult of Systems Administration, the first commandment is thou shalt not implement a change on a Friday. Or any day which is effectively a Friday — any day which precedes a scheduled vacation day, travel day, dental appointment, or company holiday, and should a non-working day fall on a Monday then the preceding Thursday shall be treated as Friday. No matter how innocuous or insignificant the change may seem, any violation of the Friday Commandment will result in the SysAdmin Gods smiting you.

And the SysAdmin Gods do not smite lightly.

Anything not important enough to get done by Thursday is by definition also not so important that it cannot wait until Monday.
