Cooler weather is finally coming to South Florida. Right now it’s pretty pleasant, almost cool enough to keep the windows open all day at home. And that means it is time to start equipping my Bushmaster Carbon 15 Model 4 for use at the outdoor range. As much as I enjoy shooting indoors and air conditioned at Ace’s, 25 yards just isn’t very sporting for a rifle.
So I hit the gun show today, picked up a nice illuminated scope and a 20-round mag that is more appropriate for range use than the 30-round that came with the gun.
Fitment of the scope was a bit problematic due to the non-removable rear sight. Bushmaster is now offering a flat-top upper receiver for the Carbon 15 that, besides providing a better mounting position for the scope, would allow me to use a standard shell deflector. I’m a southpaw and getting nailed in the cheek and neck by (very hot) ejected shell casings really takes the fun out of shooting so I think $150 for a new upper would be money well spent!
That’ll also mean that I need a new rear sight and probably some rail risers for the scope. And I still need to hunt down a good bipod, and possibly a laser boresight for dialing the scope in.
I really need to find a cheap hobby…
Monday Update: Ordered the upper receiver, deflector, bipod w/ mount, scope riser, and front triple-rail mount direct from Bushmaster, bringing me painfully close to having spent as much accessorizing the rifle as I paid for it in the first place…
