Along with my early morning rant I sent a two-sentence e-mail to HR:
Could you guys PLEASE put a prominent link to [benefits-site] somewhere on the staff site? I lost a ton of vacation time last year and I blame the fact that I can never find that stupid URL to check my TOP balance.
No dirty words. Fifteen words suggesting a prominent link on our staff site. Twenty-seven words venting about the difficulty of finding the URL and lost vacation time. So of course it filters back to the boss man and I get a minor chastising via e-mail for being unprofessional.
I carefully considered my “unprofessional-ism” all day but I just couldn’t work up any apologetic or regretful feelings over what I sent. HR should be accustomed to being vented at and what I wrote really isn’t all that heavy on the “unprofessional-ness” scale. It’s not like I called them stupid (and so far as I know they are not).
My take-away from this is that venting probably shouldn’t follow my usual pattern of keeping e-mails short. If I’d sent a 1,500 word rant they probably would have ignored everything after the first sentence; I’d bet good money that my “unprofessional-ism” can be successfully buried in a sea of words.
I post this here only because I probably shouldn’t tell them all to stuff it in an e-mail, lest I be chastised again or worse. If I’m gonna get my ass fired it would be way more exciting to have it happen over something Digg-worthy like a ‘blog posting…
I’m kidding. Sort of…
