My cablecard tuners arrived this afternoon so I finally popped open the XPS 420 box. For a PC it’s actually pretty good looking. The chassis is basically the same as the Dell I purchased last year, but the skins have been updated. The front is an attractive glossy black. The optical drive is hidden behind a flip-down cover. And it’s got a SideShow doohickie up top — I had no idea it included that, guess it’s time to learn what SideShow can do.
Nothing much to report. This newest Dell was missing 10 “Important” updates vs. 9 last February. It’s sucking up over 1GB RAM after logging in, nearly 250MB by a pair processes that appear to be some Trend Micro security crap.
More later. First step: Back it up and do a restore of my old PC, just to see what happens.
