Ownage

20Jan08

Richard told me that you don’t really own the bike until you’ve dropped it. Well, Saturday afternoon I finally got around to buying a new full-faced helmet and about 40 minutes into my first ride the bike and I got owned by a median. Luckily the median was the grassy variety with no trees. After standing up and determining that I wasn’t bleeding and hadn’t broken any bones, my first thought was “I hope my iPhone is ok.”

Got some minor abrasions around my left elbow. My left shoulder is very sore — don’t think I’ll be doing any heavy lifting for a while — and I’ve got minor aches all over. But nothing seems major and my iPhone escaped completely unscathed.

Damned lucky tho. Like an idiot I was riding in slacks and a t-shirt, had I landed on asphalt this minor accident could have been a serious ER visit. The reality is that this probably won’t be the last time I fall so the bike is staying parked until I’ve got a complete set of armored gear.

As for the bike… The oil filter got crushed and by now I’m sure that most of the oil has drained. The windscreen got knocked off, it’s intact but the front shroud has to be replaced. A number of scratches but nothing worth having repaired.

The worst damage is to my ego.
