Getting SSDs to Perform

23Feb08

There are a few tricks to using SSD. An SSD config without any sort of tuning is going to be a dog in terms of performance. A naive SSD + MySQL implementation is going to be really slow when deployed out of the box.

— Kevin Burton, Final Thoughts on SSD and MySQL

Kevin has a bunch of great tips for getting the most out of SSD drives: Disable write caching, disable read-ahead, noatime, match RAID stripe size and DB page size to the block size of the device (4KB on the Mtrons). Definitely take the time to read his previous posts on SSD testing.

I think it’s a safe bet that we’ll be offering SSD configurations to all of our customers soon, but you didn’t hear it from me.
