Quarters

31Mar08

One of the unintended side-effects of not using cash anymore is that the large bills in my wallet never become smaller bills, eventually leaving me with no ones to use in the soda machine at work and depleting the stash of quarters I kept in my desk drawer.
So I went to the bank to deposit […]

MS Money

31Mar08

Decided to install a trial version of MS Money to see if the latest version was worth paying for vs. continuing to use Mint for free. On the plus side, Money can access all of my accounts and gets transactions directly from my credit union without using Yodlee — two months after reporting the problem […]

Collections Update

30Mar08

I’ve paid off two of my collection accounts this past week. Both have already dropped from Experian, giving a small bump. It’ll be nicer when they drop from Equifax because nearly every credit application I’ve made in the past year has pulled EQU, and one has been mis-reporting as a past-due installment account.
There’s one other […]

401(k)

27Mar08

I’ve been neglecting my 401(k) since the employer switched us from Fidelity to ING. Tonight I finally got signed up and took a look around… and holy crap does ING suck. No index tracking funds. No Vanguard-style “Target Retirement” funds. No direct investment options. Not all that many fund options to begin with and many […]

You can’t make up shit like this.

26Mar08

Would-be carjacker foiled by manual transmission and pistol-packing priest. In the parking lot of the West Palm Beach courthouse. After being released RoR on another charge.
I think that beats drinking while driving by the Miami-Dade police headquarters. Way to go, WPB!

Why I stay with my credit union

25Mar08

I’ve been a customer of my credit union since… at least 1998, maybe 1997. I joined because their main office was about a 30-second drive from where I worked, and their free checking account was really free at a time when most banks still had minimum balance requirements.
It has been tempting to leave them on […]

Weekend Movies in (Brief) Review

23Mar08

Jumper — Almost as bad as Snakes on a Plane. Has Samuel L Jackson ever met a script that he didn’t like?
No Country for Old Men — Possibly the best movie of 2007.
This Film is Not Yet Rated — Surprisingly entertaining.
The Number 23 — Lasted about 32 minutes before I shut it off.

Wagons get no respect

20Mar08

Going to work this morning I passed a Lamborghini Gallardo. That wouldn’t be terribly unusual except for the fact that this one wasn’t holding up traffic at 10mph under the limit.
Tried to get the driver to play but it seems that the owners of Italian cars are never in the mood. Too bad. I’ve been […]
