Unimpressed

18Mar08

I’ve recently become a Washington Mutal customer. I’m keeping my accounts with my credit union, but they don’t have any branches convenient to where I live and work these days so I figured I’d go with another bank to take my savings and smaller deposits.

So far I’m not impressed. First there was the comments form that wouldn’t accept comments. Then it was two weeks to receive my debit card. Several more days to get the PIN not-of-my-choosing. And I’m still waiting for checks.

I’m starting a new savings regiment and this past Friday was pay day, so over the weekend I went to transfer some money from my credit union to my new WaMu savings account with 4% interest. This is what I got:

The initial transfer to your Online Savings account must be from an eligible WaMu account.

Apparently my dirty, credit union checking account money isn’t good enough to pop a WaMu savings account’s cherry.

And then at the office on Monday I got handed my reimbursement check for my visit to Atlanta last month. Make a quick run out to WaMu to deposit it, and I get this:

Exception Hold — New Customer.

Because I am a new customer my deposits are not to be trusted. Good thing that I didn’t need that money to pay my credit card bills from that trip. The friendly folks at the Doral WaMu branch informed me that all of my checks will be held for 7 days until my account is a month old. Nice.

Maybe this crap is the norm in banking these days. I chose WaMu because they have branches closest to where I live and work, and they have no fees that will affect me, so none of these issues bother me more than having to burn $7 in gas to visit my credit union’s nearest branch… But I don’t think I’ll be recommending WaMu to anyone else.
