I haven’t shopped for car insurance since switching from Progressive Direct to Drive by Progressive 2.5 years ago, so I figured that it was about time to take another look around. Over the past several days I’ve gotten quotes from Allstate, State Farm, Geico, AIG, and Liberty Mutual.

Some asked for the standard 3-year driving history. Others asked for 5 or 6 years, which I’m not sure it legit for Florida. Most asked about the number of miles driven to work or per year. I omitted my car accident from six years ago next month but otherwise answered all questions truthfully — one speeding ticket for +15mph two years ago, a comprehensive claim almost three years ago from Hurricane Wilma, a failure to yield ticket nearly 4.5 years ago, and my odometer counts off about 20,000 miles per year.

AIG is the only company that came back with a quote in the right ballpark but it was still about 33% higher than my Progressive renewal. The others ranged from around 125% to 250% higher and on a couple of those I’d neglected to select UM coverage.

I suppose the only real surprise is that Liberty Mutual quoted a 1-year policy — I didn’t think anybody offered those anymore.

I’m happy to stick with Progressive, their ability to quickly settle claims after Hurricane Wilma really made a positive impression on me. I could probably save 20% with a lesser insurer but my insurance isn’t so expensive as to be worth the risk. I will, however, be use a credit card to finance this renewal, which will save 10% or so…
