Reset

16Oct04

I was in the home stretch of remotely installing Debian to my dedicated server when the NOC rebooted it because the monitoring system showed it as down. Oops.
In theory this should have been recoverable by telling lilo to boot again from the Debian image instead of the default, but now it’s doing the LI and […]

X

06Oct03

Building up my PC at work last week, I noticed that Cygwin/XFree86 added “multi-window” and integrated clipboard support back in January (obviously I hadn’t updated Cygwin in a while). What that means is each X window gets treated like any other window, complete with Luna styling on XP. The show up on the Taskbar like […]

The Best Laid Plans

25Jul03

My plan for last weekend, to re-pave my Zaurus and test drive some alternative ROMs, didn’t quite work out. Instead I started the prep work for re-paving my Debian/Linux box (bovine) because I have violated one of the principal tenets of Systems Administration.
Never experiment on a system you are not prepared to rebuild.

I’d like to find a way to automate that process. Preferably in a semi-intelligent manner: […]

CNET is reporting that:
Microsoft is acquiring the rights to Unix technology from SCO Group, a move that could impact the battle between Windows and Linux in the market for computer operating systems.[snip]Late Sunday, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said acquiring the license from SCO “is representative of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to respecting intellectual property and […]

State of the Email Migration

07Feb03

I’ve been using Fetchmail for a week now. A few days ago I consolodated my 10 POP accounts to a single multidrop mailbox and converted all of my Outlook Rules to procmail. The migration hasn’t been painless, but neither has it been as painful as I feared.
Outlook 2002 has proven to be less-than-reliable in handling […]
